Chapter 1:

A girl is riding her bike as fast as possible up a hill, and she announces that she's only got 200m to go. Two guys watching comment how she's going up the hill on her bike instead of walking it, like most people-must be really steep.

At school, she sees two friends, who remind her that bikes aren't allowed at school, but Fuuko, the girl, confidently says it's safe, she'll hide it in her usual place. Her full name is Konami Fuuko, and she's a freshman in high school. She tells us there's a guy right now whom she can't stop thinking about.

Fuuko gets to her hiding place, behind an old school building. Then she notices someone above her, walking on the rail of the building roof! She remembers that the rooftop's door and window are locked so nobody should be able to get in, and thinks that it must be Him. She pulls out a camera, thinking she'll show her abilities as a former member of the photography club, and that she can get proof from this, but before she clicks, he disappears! Fuuko hears an exclamation behind her, and turns to see that she's stepped on a guy's hand. He angrily asks what class she's from, and Fuuko recalls that this is also where some 'problem students' hang out sometimes. She shouts "I'm sorry!" and runs off, chased by the guys. The rooftop guy, looking a bit perpendicular^_^, sees and thinks that she's in his class.

Fuuko finally escapes to class, and her friends ask if she isn't scared always going to the old building alone. She asks why, and they tell her there's supposed to be a wall-climbing ghost there. The teacher comes in, and then a late male student. The teacher asks why, and he says he slept in, getting a crack on the head with a book for it. Fuuko watches him as he sits down, and explains that this is the guy who's in her thoughts lately, Funakoshi Ruka. She asks him if he was on the roof before, and he looks at her in silence. She waits, thinking smugly that he doesn't know what to say, and then, after a few more seconds, he asks her what her name is! Fuuko gets mad and tells him that after several months in the same class, and several weeks sitting right next to her, he should know. Funakoshi replies that he's bad at remembering names, and the teacher interrupts, telling them to be quiet, then mentioning that Fuuko came to school that day by bicycle. The teacher says that she, along with Funakoshi because he was late, have garbage duty for a week. Fuuko seems pretty happy about it.

That day after school, they're doing the garbage, and Fuuko thinks that this is a chance to get closer to Funakoshi. She tells him he's different, even though he doesn't seem to have a 'dark' personality, he hasn't made any real friends with the boys, and if people talk to him, he just smiles and doesn't say much. Funakoshi starts to say something but Fuuko continues, saying she always felt a bond with him because his name is 'Ruka' and hers is 'Fuuko' (there's one kanji they have in common). She comments how cute the name is, and asks if she can call him by it. He just looks at her strangely, then walks away from her, saying she can't. Fuuko is undeterred, reflecting that though he's tough, she won't give up easily, until she finds out his true identity! The next few days show her talking to him a lot and putting her desk close to his to share textbooks, but she doesn't make much headway. After school one day, she thinks that in normal school life, not much is revealed, she needs a special situation. Then she finds that she's forgotten her camera in the classroom and goes back to get it, and she comes upon Funakoshi sleeping on the windowsill(doesn't seem very comfortable to me, but oh well). She wonders if she should wake him, but decides not to, thinking that when she sees him looking so vulnerable, she feels like a horrible villain. She decides to wake him up and turns, but he's not there anymore! She's afraid he fell, and rushes to the window, only to see him strolling nonchalantly away on the ground.

Fuuko sprints down the stairs, exulting that he's finally shown himself, and knowing that he went in the direction of the old building. She sees him going around a corner and jumps out with her camera at the ready, declaring that she knows that the wall-climbing monster is really Funakoshi, but the only thing there is a little fox-type animal with huge ears.

Fuuko doesn't know where he went or what the animal is, quickly deciding aloud that it must be Funakoshi-not only can he walk on walls, he can also transform! From behind her, Funakoshi asks what she's doing. He asks her not to scare the animal, it was his pet but it escaped and has been living here, and it's finally gotten used to him. It's a Fennec Fox.

Then Funakoshi asks what she was saying about a wall-climbing monster, and Fuuko, red-faced at first, stands up and says if he's going to be that purposely ignorant, she'll have to use her strongest weapon, and holds up a photo saying it's evidence. Funakoshi looks at it and calls it scary(it's a picture of Fuuko dressed up in a yukata and ganguro, holding up a big knife), and Fuuko says she took the wrong one, that's one from the summer haunted walk event. She hands him another one, saying it's not totally clear, but that's him right? She had wanted to finish off her film so she did a self-portrait and missed. Fuuko says she doesn't intend to blackmail him, she just wants him to help a bit with his power.

They're suddenly interrupted by the three guys who chased Fuuko before-they're back for revenge. Fuuko, stalling for time, tells him quickly to pose for a photo, which they do, and before they realize, Fuuko and Funakoshi are escaping on her bike. Fuuko is relieved, but then they see that the guys have bikes too!(Only two, so the two minor guys have to ride together). They're going down the last hill-Funakoshi says it's dangerous with two people, but Fuuko just shouts to go faster. Then a car comes up around the bend, but Fuuko's brakes don't work! They hurdle towards the car and Fuuko screams really loud, until Funakoshi tells her to hold on tight and not to upset his balance, and then they go up the wall above the car! Everybody is struck dumb, until the guys behind run into the car, and Fuuko asks Funakoshi where they're riding on. Funakoshi tells her she shouldn't be surprised by now, reminding her that this power was what she had been after. They stop, and Fuuko falls off.

Funakoshi explains his power, it's being able to control his gravity level, so he can walk on walls and ceilings, but even so, there's nothing great about having the power. Fuuko is amazed, and says it is great, and there must be something you can use it for. She's grabbed onto the front of his shirt, and Funakoshi asks her not to get close to him if at all possible, because he doesn't want 'it' to spread. Fuuko thinks he's talking about her, but he forestalls her outburst and asks what she wants him to do for her. She shows him a horror magazine, with an ad for a scary photo contest with a 100000Y prize(about $1000US). She excitedly tells him that they can split the prize 8-2 (with Fuuko getting the 80%, naturally), and then she can finally buy a cell phone and a special hair dryer to fix her wayward hair. Funakoshi starts walking away, and Fuuko stops him, saying how about 7-3? but he says he doesn't want to use his power for bad things. Fuuko says this is no big deal, and it's not like anyone would get hurt by him using his power, right? For a second, Funakoshi gets a serious look on his face, and Fuuko falls silent, but then he tells her she could win with 'this' (a photo of Fuuko with a scary-faced watermelon on her head waving a bat at night) anyways, and Fuuko isn't sure of what she saw.

Fuuko doesn't give up, next making the ultimate sacrifice and changing the balance to 6-4, and Funakoshi asks if he does it, will she stop hanging around him all the time? Fuuko pauses, and then says yes, and Funakoshi agrees to that. Fuuko wonders why she's disappointed...right then, a very pretty girl starts talking to Funakoshi, calling him by his first name, Ruka. It's Hamana Yumi, a top student who's not very friendly but has a lot of hidden fans because of her 'cool beauty'. Fuuko asks if they're acquaintances, and Funakoshi tells her they were in middle school together. Yumi has come because someone called Natsuki wants Funakoshi. Funakoshi says he's not done garbage duty yet, but Fuuko, a little tersely, grabs his bag, saying she can finish on her own, and she'll see him after at the old building. After she leaves, Yumi comments on how much Fuuko and Funakoshi have been together lately, and asks if it's 'alright'. Funakoshi agrees, saying that he should distance himself from her. Walking down the hall, Fuuko is kind of pissed at how different Funakoshi's attitude is towards Yumi and her, and remembers how he told her not to hang around him.

On the roof, Funakoshi feeds the fox and remembers his previous discussion with Fuuko, thinking that after they take the picture and she leaves him alone, things will be quiet again. His thoughts are interrupted by someone grabbing him by the shirt.

Fuuko, still pondering her feelings, admits that she doesn't really have a right to be angry at Funakoshi for being cold, but after getting to know each other, she doesn't want to go back to being just classmates. Then she looks up, and sees the bullies from before advancing on Funakoshi. She tries to open the roof door, but they've blocked it. Meanwhile, Funakoshi apologizes for running away before, but the head bully says that's not good enough, they're going to take it out of his hide(well, they don't exactly say that, but close enough ^_-) If he tries to get away again, they're going to hurt his 'dog'.

Fuuko, rinning as fast as possible up the stairs, finally flings the door open...of the building beside the old one. She shouts at the bullies to stop, saying they're mad at her, not at Funakoshi, right? The bullies are going to ignore her, thinking she can't do anything from there anyways, but Fuuko steps onto the railing and jumps across, but she doesn't quite make it! She starts to fall, and Funakoshi catches her ankle, while she's upside-down. Totally embarrassed(her skirt is not as gravity-proof as Funakoshi), Fuuko yells at him not to look, and surprised, he lets go of her ankle...

The bullies, knowing that she fell, run away while Funakoshi looks over the railing. Fuuko thinks that for a second her field of vision twisted, wonders where she is, and looks up at Funakoshi, who tells her it's ok, the bullies are gone. Fuuko's view seems strange, and as she looks down at the ground and realizes she's sideways on the wall, Funakoshi reminds her that he told her not to hang around him- the power is contagious!

Fuuko thinks that in the midst of this incredible situation, she realized that she's started to like Funakoshi and his weird power...or maybe that's how it was from the start, when she accidentally caught him on camera...

A ways away, Yumi and some long-haired blond guy watch, and the guy says they have a new comrade...
