Chapter 10:
Later, Ruka is thinking back to when Natsuki
first got his ears pierced. It was soon
after his accident, and he said that when he was diving he didn’t want to
chance getting them caught on the diving hose, but now that he couldn’t
dive anymore, he decided to do it. Then Fuuko calls to
him, bringing him out of his thoughts.
He brings her attention to a school of dolphins, and when she’s
excited to see them, he suggests they get a closer look. He then shows her how to walk on water,
saying that he’s sure she can do it, and when she can, he smiles and says
even Natsuki can’t do that. Fuuko looks at him
and thinks that probably he couldn’t treat Yumi
this way just because he’s so aware of her as a woman(although Fuuko and he have actually ki8ssed) and, remembering how Natsuki said Ruka and Yumi are idiots, thinks that she, too, is afraid of asking Ruka’s real feelings.
When they get back on shore, Fuuko remarks how
impressed she is, and Ruka says if Occhan was here, he’d definitely take tons of
pictures. Fuuko
asks if he can walk on water as well, and Ruka says
no, he would come by boat, and then asks if he hadn’t told her before –
adults don’t ‘catch’ his power. Fuuko is surprised
and asks why not, but Ruka doesn’t know. Fuuko starts to
wonder if that means they’ll lose it once they grow up, when she notices Yumi getting hit on by some
The contest is
to see who can ride a certain wave the longest, and though Natsuki
gets up first one of the university students knocks him down. Fuuko gets mad, and
yelling that against a young opponent they're acting immature, she runs on the
wave and side kicks one of them. Yumi notices that Natsuki is
underwater too long, and sinking, Natsuki’s ear
starts to hurt. He passes out, but Ruka saves him. When
he regains consciousness, he hears Yumi saying it’s
good that Ruka was there to save him, and he gets mad
at Ruka, saying he never asked for his help. Yumi comments on
his attitude, and Ruka tells him not to cause Yumi so much worry.
Then Natsuki gets really mad, and tells Ruka their relationship is none of his business, if Ruka’s doing it out of guilt for the old accident, it’s
getting rea;;y presemtuous
of him. Everybody's feeling very tense,
and Fuuko watches them. Ruka just
apologizes, and Fuuko silently asks him why he’s
apologizing, why Yumi’s not saying anything,
and why Natsuki isn’t saying what he really
feels, and from the tree above, Fuuko drops coconuts,
surprising them all. She shouts at them
all to be honest and say what they really mean, or else nothing will change the
way it hasn’t for the past two years.
Natsuki shouts that it has nothing to do with
her, and she retorts that it does, because she likes Ruka,
and right now she can't do anything about it because they aren’t moving
forward. Natsuki
then says to Ruka that he doesn't care who Yumi likes, he won't let her go, and Yumi
slaps him! She tells him that of course
the old accident still bothers her because she was afraid Natsuki
might die, but she wouldn't go out with him just out of pity, and if he doesn't
believe it now, they should just quit, and storms off. Ruka says he’s
always known that Yumi only sees Natsuki,
and he has something to tell Natsuki as well –
that earring has never looked good, and Natsuki
should give it up. Natsuki
follows Yumi, and in the calm left behind, Ruka suggests that Fuuko come
down out of the tree. Ruka tells her he always knew that Yumi
likes Natsuki, because she told him about the
underwater kiss and asked if she should tell him that she liked him as
well. That’s when he gave her the necklace, it was a good luck charm for her and Natsuki. Back in the present, Ruka
looks at the necklace and comments that it brings back memories, and he guesses
Yumi doesn’t need it anymore. Then Fuuko, looking
fed up, asks him where her answer is,
and Ruka asks her if that kiss was serious. Fuuko gets mad,
saying of course it was serious, and it’s horrible how he’s ignored
it since Valentine’s. Ruka explains that he thought it might have been an
accident because the balloon shifted, and then slowly says he’s sorry,
but right now he can’t think of that kind of thing. Fuuko looks blank,
and he adds that for now, he wants to stay just friends with her, but he really
doesn’t want them to become uneasy around each other because of
this. Fuuko is
disappointed but she pretty much expected this, and thinks that she said the
same thing before.
It cuts to Fuuko and Ruka in diving gear, Ruka’s already in the water but Fuuko
is still in the boat, and she asks if this isn’t a bit sudden, her being
a beginner and everything. Ruka says it’s fine because
of her natural physical ability, and Natsuki, in
normal clothes, kicks her out of the boat telling her not to be so chicken. Fuuko is annoyed
but then forgets about it when she catches sight of the coral reef, with fishes
swimming and Ruka waiting for her with his hand
outstretched. She thinks that this is
what all four of them have seen, and wonders if she’s come closer to Ruka with this.
On dry land, Natsuki tells Yumi she should
have gone as well, but she protests that without him it would be boring
anyways. He’s embarrassed and
wonders if Yumi always said things like this, and Yumi asks if she can come up as well(Natsuki’s
sitting on a rock hill). On the way up, she
loses her footing but is saved by Natsuki who asks what’s
wrong. She responds that since morning
she’s felt weird, and she feels like her power is fading…
In the deep, Fuuko and Ruka watch the scenery,
and Fuuko wonders if she can slowly become the person
closest to Ruka…
